Haskins Garden Centres offers advice on creating a lush lawn

Autumn is the perfect time to tend to lawns for the following year and Haskins Garden Centre is offering gardeners advice on how to get their green spaces back in top condition.

Alasdair Urquhart, plant advisor at Haskins Garden Centre, said: “Following a warm and dry summer, gardens will have been used to their fullest with families enjoying BBQs or playing garden games. Now that autumn is here and the nights are drawing in, garden owners often notice patches of grass which are in need of some attention.”
It is easy to get the garden back to its lushest, by following a few simple steps:

  • If your lawn feels ‘springy’ then it’s time to scarify. Use a spring-tine rake to remove thatch, moss or debris to allow the root zone to breathe
  • Once the autumn rains have softened hard ground, spike with a fork or mechanical aerator to improve drainage and air-circulation
  • Over-seed any thin or worn areas with a fast acting lawn seed, such as Johnsons Quick Lawn or Patch Fix
  • Apply a loam and sand based lawn dressing to aid soil structure and drainage
  • Repair or cut new edges to freshen up the lawn’s appearance
  • Stop mowing when temperatures regularly drop below 10°c
  • Opt for an autumn formulated lawn feed and avoid high doses of nitrogen fertiliser that would usually be used in spring
