Garden Centre Team Votes for Charity of Year

The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation has been voted by the Haskins Garden Centre team of retail and catering staff as the centre’s charity of the year.  Assistant General Manager Andrew Stevens invited the charity’s founders Linda and Pete Thornton to the centre to tell them the good news and present a cheque for £1235 raised at events thanks to the generosity of customers and staff over the last 12 months.

Linda and Pete Thornton, who founded the charity to honour the memory of their son, a former pupil at Ferndown Upper School who was killed in Southern Afghanistan in March 2008 whilst serving as a Royal Marine Officer, said that they were delighted with the news.

“We thank everyone for donating to the foundation.  The money provides the funding for many activities and events that enhance the lives of a variety young people from the area, offered as bursaries selected by the trustees through official organisations.  Over £60,000 has been allocated this year,” said Linda Thornton. “For example the money raised at Haskins can fund 6 places to experience 4 days at sea with the Tall Ships Trust where both able bodied and disabled work together to crew the ships.”
