Awards for Southampton in Bloom Competition Winners


The Sheriff of Southampton, Cllr. Carol Cunio, presented the winners of the Southampton In Bloom competition their awards at a ceremony attended by over 100 people held at the Haskins Garden Centre at West End.

The Best Private Garden gold award was presented to Lesley and Alan Roshier from Bitterne Park, Stephanie and Alan Potter also from Bitterne Park, won the Best Private Garden First Time Entry. Best Cottage Style Garden Gold award went to Edward Waite. David Francis Wilson from Lordshill won the Best Courtyard Garden Category. Best Wildlife Garden went to Sarah Wood. Best Hanging Basket or Wall Container gold award was won by Chris and Gill Hayes from Bannister Park, Alan Beare won Best Container including Tubs & window boxes.

John Hannan and Linda Lee, proprietors of Tucks Café in Shirley won the Best Public or Commercial Building gold award while the Yacht Tavern, Woolston, won Best Public House.

Steven Barrows and Mrs Carolyn Pack from Portelet House were presented Gold for the Best Frontage, Walkway or Individual Balcony. The Best Communal Area in Sheltered Housing went to Mr Alan Beare from Portswood and Len Amos from Shirley won Best Individual Garden within a Sheltered Housing Scheme.

Debbie Fredericks from Bassett grew the Tallest Sunflower at 338cm and Joseph Chamber, from Sholing, won the under 16s competition with a sunflower 330cm high.

Tanners Brook Infants in Millbrook won the Schools – Colours ‘Container’ Gardening competition, Oakwood Infants at Lordswood won the Best Schools Wildlife Garden and Valentine Infants, Sholing won the Gold Award for a Garden For learning.

Enid Greenham, Chairman of the Southampton In Bloom Committee, thanked the prize sponsors Hilliers Garden Centres, Mayfield Nurseries, Exbury Gardens, Southampton City Primary Care Trust, Kings Seeds and Haskins for not only sponsoring a category but for hosting the awards evening free for the competition.

“ The judges were impressed with the high level of entries for this year’s competition and the wonderful variety of plants used to provide colour and a haven to urban wildlife,” said Enid Greenham.
