Awards for Southampton in Bloom Competition Winners

Over 100 people attended the Southampton In Bloom competition awards ceremony hosted by the Haskins Garden Centre at West End. The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Southampton Cllr Carol Cunio presented certificates and trophies to those judged to best out of 186 entries from home owners, businesses and schools in the area. The event was introduced by Enid Greenham, Chairman of the Southampton In Bloom Committee, who thanked the hard work of the committee members and the judges for the time they will have spent visiting properties.

The Best Private Garden gold award was presented to Stephanie Potter of Manor Farm Road, Bitterne Park, Belinda Hayes from Julian Road, Sholing won the Best Private Garden First Time Entry. Best Cottage Style Garden Gold award went to Chris Jenkins. Margaret O’Donnell of Vanguard Road, Bitterne won the Best Courtyard Garden Category. Best Wildlife Garden went to Joyce Green from the Athelstan Road Allotments. Best Hanging Basket or Wall Container gold award was won by Chris and Gill Hayes from Bannister Park, Alan Beare won Best Container including Tubs.

John Hannan and Linda Lee, proprietors of Tucks Café in Shirley won the Best Public Building gold award while the Humble Plumb,Bitterne & The Yacht Tavern, Woolston, were joint winners of Best Public House.

Ken and Eileen Fielder from Griffen Court, St Denys were presented Gold for the Best Frontage, Walkway or Individual Balcony. The Best Communal Area in Sheltered Housing went to Mr Alan Beare from Portswood and Bobbie Brunt from Maybush won Best Individual Garden within a Sheltered Housing Scheme.

Isabelle Simpkins from Winchester Road grew the tallest Sunflower, in the under 16s category, at 268cm.

Enid Greenham, thanked the prize sponsors Hilliers Garden Centres, Mayfield Nurseries, Exbury Gardens, Southampton City Primary Care Trust, Kings Seeds, and Haskins for not only sponsoring a category but for hosting the awards evening free for the competition.

“Not only have we seen a high level of entries this year – we have also had the opportunity to visit gardens and locations of a very high standard.” said Enid Greenham.
