Garden Centre Helps School Launch Eco Project

Tanners Brook Junior School in Southampton has launched a new eco project that will involve all the 325 pupils. An allotment within the school grounds has been constructed ready for the planting of a wide range of fruit and vegetables so that the 7 to 11 year olds can learn how to cultivate and prepare the produce for eating.

The Haskins Garden Centre at West End responded to an appeal for help with the project by offering a £100 worth of plants, seeds and equipment. Haskins General Manager Matt Hill was invited to see the first of the strawberries being planted.

“It’s great to encourage children to have a go at growing their own produce,” said Matt Hill. “We will also supply compost to help the plants along.”

The school plans to develop this project further and work towards achieving the Eco-Schools award for sustainability.

Any offers of help would be gratefully received by contacting Nicola Newnham, School Business Manager on 023 8087 8010.
