Key Buying Job for Nepalese Scholarship Winner

In 1984, Uri Rana-Bennett said goodbye to her family and friends in Kathmandu and left to study in England. At the age of nine she had won one of only six education scholarships that year that were competed for by more than 50,000 Nepali students. Now, after a series of retail managerial and buying roles with UK, including the RHM, Co-operative Group and with Makro Wholesale for the last 14 years, Uri has been appointed Gift and Houseware Buyer for the £28 million turnover Haskins Garden Centres group.

Responsible for a budget of over £5 million, mother of two Uri said that her plan is to enhance the range of affordable, good quality products that won’t be found immediately on the high street, ideally UK manufactured and locally sourced in the regions surrounding the four Haskins centres.

Julian Winfield, Chief Executive for Haskins, said: “We believe that Uri will take the Gift and Houseware departments to a new level thanks to her refreshing approach to this specific retail challenge.”

The gift departments within the centres currently contribute 21% to the total turnover of the Haskins group.
