Skimmia are compact evergreen shrubs, grown for their foliage, flowers and red fruits.

Skimmia thrive in semi shade conditions in either containers or open ground and prefer slightly acidic soil, although they can also grow in neutral soil with a little help. They are best in well-drained soil and can tolerate periods of drought as their leaves are leathery and can retain moisture well.

They produce attractive flower buds from November which will open into flowers in spring. Red berries can also be found on plants in May/June where male and female Skimmias are planted together, providing good all year round colour.

  • Plant in partial shade.
  • Thrive in well drained acidic soil.
  • Ideal to grow in containers or in the ground.
