Palms are fantastic plants to beat the summer drought!

Chamaerops and Trachycarpus are small to medium sized shrubs producing fan line leaves, whilst the Phoenix palm and Cordylines will grow taller to produce specimen plants.

Whichever you prefer, these plants will keep going in times of heat, giving your garden that Mediterranean feel 🌴🌴🌴

Whilst many plants flower in the spring, there are those that wait until the late summer to bless us with their vivid colours. One of those stars is Rudbeckia or 'black-eyed-susans'.

Native to North America, Rudbeckias have gained popularity due to their long flowering season that lasts from July to October. Although yellow is the prominent colour, in recent years numerous red- and orange-flowered varieties have been produced extending their colour palette.

Rudbeckias are easy to establish, naturalize well, and require little maintenance other than deadheading. They'll thrive in full sun or partial shade and in moisture retentive, free draining soils. If clumps get too big for their space, consider dividing them in spring.

Traditionally used in cottage and informal gardens, we think they'd look great in large patio containers, especially in town and courtyard gardens.

Virtually pest free, they're very attractive to bees, who love their black cone centres which are full of nectar. They also make a great cut flower, offering a cheery welcome in your home 🌼🌼🌼

With all the sunshine we're experiencing, we hope that everyone's pumpkins and other squashes are growing well! 🎃 🎃 🎃

Under normal seasonal conditions, now would be the best time for gardeners to remove excess leaves to help ripen them off. However, with the unusual heat we've had this year, it maybe worth delaying that as the leaves will offer some protection. ☀️☀️☀️

The same would apply to tomatoes and soft fruits if you're looking to harvest a bit earlier but I think the priority at the moment is efficient watering in the late evening or early morning to help sustain the crop 🍇🍅🎃

How's your kitchen garden or allotment going? We'd love to hear what strategies people are taking to maintain their crops, so leave a comment below and share the knowledge ⬇️⬇️⬇️
