Haskins in Ferndown supports ‘Get Dorset Buzzing’ to help the plight of pollinators

Haskins Garden Centre in Ferndown has teamed up with Dorset Wildlife Trust to act as a venue for the charity’s ‘Get Dorset Buzzing’ Roadshow on Wednesday July 3.

‘Get Dorset Buzzing’ is one of the charity’s ongoing campaigns for 2019, encouraging local people to do at least one thing to help declining pollinators in their gardens. Continuing its support of the charity, Haskins is helping to promote a sustainable future for Dorset’s wildlife and people.

On Wednesday July 3, Dorset Wildlife Trust will be visiting Haskins as part of its series of Facebook Live events for the ‘Get Dorset Buzzing’ Roadshow. Haskins staff will be interviewed as part of the charity’s live Q&A session, aiming to create positive outcomes for garden wildlife.

There will be fun-filled activities for the whole family, including:

  • The Pollinator Wheel of Fortune – based on the popular TV gameshow ‘Wheel of Fortune,’ inviting people to spin the wheel and land on different segments of the wheel. There will be a selection of segments that describe good things for pollinators and other segments that describe bad things for pollinators. Whichever segment the arrow lands on, meaningful conversations will then be encouraged to discuss the plight of pollinators and what can be done to help them.
  • Face in the Hole – inviting people to get their photo taken and share their photos on social media, tagging #getdorsetbuzzing, @HaskinsGarden and @DorsetWildlife.
  • Buzz Wire Game – like the popular Operation boardgame, people are invited to try to complete the puzzle without it ‘buzzing.’

Lisa Looker, brand director at Haskins commented: “We’re excited to support Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Roadshow and look forward to welcoming them to Haskins. By hosting events like this, we hope to remind people that as well as creating a haven for wildlife, gardening can really help you combat stress and help you cope with the pressures of modern society.”

Those interested in attending but unable to make the ‘Get Dorset Buzzing’ event at Haskins, can catch up via Facebook Live https://en-gb.facebook.com/dorsetwildlife.

Sally Cooper, corporate development officer at Dorset Wildlife Trust, commented: “Our ‘Get Dorset Buzzing’ campaign aims to raise awareness about the plight of pollinators and what people can do to save them. We’re so grateful to organisations including Haskins for working with us to put on our Roadshow of events.

“We hope to encourage gardeners to think about creating a haven for wildlife. Even making the smallest of changes can help – including choosing plants that pollinators prefer, developing a bug hotel or ensuring bird feeders are topped up.

“We’ll have plenty of information for you to take away from Haskins, including wildlife gardening leaflets, merchandise and the opportunity to sign up to receive our newsletter for more information about helping pollinators.”
