Welcome to the Haskins Garden Centre’s Blog. My name is Alasdair and I’m the Plant Advisor at our Ferndown centre. As well as giving expert advice to our customers and giving talks to local schools, I will be providing you with interesting articles on all things horticultural and answering your questions online.

Looking for vibrant colour and effortless beauty? Look no further than Geum! These show stopping perennials are always a star at the Chelsea Flower Show, and for good reason.

Geum boasts a stunning range of hot colours and thrives in well-drained soil, making them a gardener's dream. They also play well with others! It's a great idea to install plant supports for tall herbaceous plants whilst they're still young and small.

Plant supports help protect against wind damage and heavy rainfall and also help keep the plant upright when large flowers start appearIt'

Have you been enjoying all those stunning Rhododendrons and Azaleas in bloom? You can enjoy that vibrant show in your own garden too, even if your soil isn't naturally acidic.

The secret? Plant them in pots using ericaceous compost, a special mix formulated for acid-loving plants. To keep them flowering beautifully year after year, give them a slow-release feed designed for acidic plants. And remember, consistent watering is key, especially in July and August when the new flower buds are forming.

We're pleased to share this amazing update about our team member, Adam Kelly, who recently won the regional heats of Costa Coffee UK’s Barista of the Year competition to progress to the UK and Ireland final.

Adam initially came top of Haskins internal competition, before also emerging victorious in the fiercely competitive Costa Coffee franchise heats.

He'll now compete against the best baristas across Costa Coffee’s UK and Ireland stores for his place in the International Barista of the Year competition.

Haskins has been running our in-house Barista of the Year competition for several years, which is a great opportunity to support our colleagues’ personal development and growth.

Last year, another team member, Michaela was named Costa Coffee’s No.3 barista globally, the highest-ranking finalist from the United Kingdom

Our Snowhill team are proud to have Adam representing the wider Haskins brand in 2024. We’ll all be cheering him on and helping where we can so that he receives the recognition he deserves as he progresses through the Costa Coffee competition stages!
