Plants such as crimson clover, mustard and phacelia are particularly useful to vegetable gardeners and allotment holders when a patch of land is going to be left uncultivated for a few weeks.

Fast to germinate from seed, these 'green manures' are also good as ground cover plants, stabilising bare earth, building important soil life and providing food for bees 🐝.

Once you're ready to grow your next crop, just fork them over into the soil and they'll improve soil structure and add some organic nutrients!

Loving this unusual bromeliad, Aechmea 'Blue Rain'.

With a very long lasting blue and red flower spike and deep green glossy leaves, this is a real statement plant and very, very easy to look after!

If you're looking for a versatile architectural plant that's ideal for a hot, dry garden then Eryngium, or Sea Holly, might be for you.

This variety, Big Blue, has a deep colour saturation when mature which can't fail to make a statement. Sea Holly naturally occurs all over the world, but has the greatest diversity in South America. Native forms also have anti-inflammatory properties. For example, in Jordan it's used as a herbal remedy for scorpion stings!

It's easy to grow so long as it has full sun and a well draining soil, where it will form a hazy drift of blue. Whilst you can cut back flower stems after flowering, the seed-heads are an attractive feature and are usually left over winter.

We think they'd look good on banks and slopes, in drought resistant gardens, cut flower borders and city courtyard gardens. They'll also fit well into coastal gardens, informal planting schemes, gravel gardens and as architectural patio and container plants.

With such a versatile use, they'd pair well with similar architectural plants such as echinacea, perovskia and rudbeckia to make a colourful addition to your own plot that will attract bees and other beneficial insects 🌸🐝🌼
